Classes Of The Week: Miranda Lloyd | Multipurpose Elephant Sculpture/Vase | Cher
Art:
Miranda Lloyd
Flowers with Paint
Miranda Lloyd is a contemporary artist known for her explorative approach to painting and mixed media, which combines abstraction with elements of realism. Her work delves into themes of identity, memory, and the natural world. Lloyd’s artistic journey unfolds through layers of texture and color, each canvas showing her skillful manipulation of materials and form. Her work often features a balance of organic shapes and geometric structures, creating a lively interaction that draws the eye. This week, we will be making colorful flower paintings similar to Lloyd’s style.
Clay:
Multipurpose Elephant Sculpture/Vase
Did you know that elephants are the largest land mammals on the planet? Elephants are characterized by their enormous bodies, large ears, and long trunks, which they use for various purposes, such as picking up objects, greeting other elephants, and drawing water for drinking or bathing. Let’s create a multipurpose elephant sculpture where the trunk can be used like a real elephant’s and transformed into a multi-use vase. Our students will gain expertise in hollowing, coiling, and pinching techniques while adding their creativity through texture, facial expressions, and connecting everything through scoring and slip to keep the piece together.
Music:
Cher
This week, we’re diving into the world of Cher, starting with a lively introduction to her iconic song “Believe.” We’ll keep the rhythm flowing with a fun cup rhythm game, where students get hands-on by rolling dice and creating patterns with colorful cups. The class will also explore pitch through Cher’s use of auto-tune, learn interesting facts about her life, and play a “Guess The Clip!” game featuring Cher and other legendary artists. We’ll wrap up with a thrilling call-and-response game, “Poison Pitch!” on the xylophone, teaching students to recognize and respond to different pitch patterns. Get ready for a musical adventure filled with fun!
